Two weeks is a long time in AI development

Businesses rapidly switched to Claude 3.7 Sonnet following launch

I think it's fascinating how quickly new AI models get adopted. Anthropic launched Claude 3.7 Sonnet a little over two weeks ago. Within days, Ramp data showed more than 10% of businesses had upgraded. Two weeks later, 3.7 is powering a quarter of all Anthropic API usage.

How does this happen so fast? When I talk to developers, they say the pace of AI development has meant learning to build software that can easily switch to new models when they get introduced (new models that are faster, more performant, and less expensive can make or break your AI startup).

And for the competing model companies OpenAI and Anthropic, meeting that developer need is table stakes. They roll out each new model through easily accessible APIs that enable these quick switches.

What we also see: how long models survive. Claude 2 launched July 2023. At the time, it was processing 50% of all queries. Less than two years later, it barely registers on our chart.
